Absolutely. I work with students applying to colleges and universities with strong visual arts programs just as I do with students applying to specialized art and design schools.

For many young artists, a traditional art school is exactly the right environment. For others, it isn’t. A student may want serious studio training while also wanting the broader academic experience of a liberal arts college or university. They may want to combine art with psychology, environmental science, business, engineering, writing, art history, or another field entirely. Some students simply aren't ready at 17 or 18 to narrow their world to one discipline—and they shouldn't have to.

This is where institutional fit becomes especially important. I help students and families look beyond the university's name and investigate the actual art program: the strength of the faculty and facilities, studio access, course offerings, interdisciplinary opportunities, critique culture, portfolio requirements, and how much freedom an undergraduate will have to develop as an artist BFA, BA, and other studio-art pathways and what those differences may mean for their college experience.

The goal is not to push a student toward “art school.” It is to help them identify the educational environment where they can grow both as an artist and as a person and then develop a portfolio that authentically represents who they are when they apply.

Involved—but differently from the student.

Parents are often carrying the logistical and financial side of the process, and they deserve to understand what is happening. At the same time, the portfolio needs to remain the student's territory.

I like to create a healthy division between the two. Parents can have a place to ask questions about schools, expectations, timelines, investment, and progress without the student feeling that every drawing or creative decision is being scrutinized at home.

For many families, having an independent person in the middle actually reduces tension. The parent gets to be the parent again, and the student gets the space to become the artist.

Look beyond an impressive website.

Ask how long the person has actually taught young artists, whether they have experience evaluating portfolios, whether they understand current art-school admissions expectations, and whether they have worked with students across different media, abilities, and types of institutions.

Most importantly, ask how they work with students. A consultant should be able to challenge a young artist without taking ownership of their work. They should understand the difference between improving a portfolio and manufacturing one.

Parents should also feel comfortable asking about experience, results, communication, fees, boundaries, and exactly what is included before entering into a longer engagement.

Yes—and it's an important conversation to have.

Parents often want reassurance that their child is building toward a meaningful adult life, while the student may hear those questions as, “You don't believe in me.” That can create unnecessary tension around the college process.

Part of my role is helping families have a more informed conversation about the enormous range of creative disciplines, educational paths, and professional possibilities available to students with strong visual and creative skills. We can talk candidly about goals, different kinds of programs, costs, career preparation, and what the student actually wants from an art education—without diminishing the importance of their creative life.

This is one of the most important parts of the process, and it's about much more than rankings or name recognition.

Two excellent art schools can provide dramatically different experiences. One student may thrive in an intensely conceptual environment, while another needs exceptional technical instruction. Some students want a traditional art-school experience; others need the breadth of a university. Some flourish with independence and competition; others do their best work in a collaborative, nurturing community.

We look at the student's artwork, personality, learning style, interests, goals, and preferred environment and then examine programs through that lens. The question isn't simply, “What is the best art school?” It is, “Where is this particular young artist most likely to grow?”

A good one shouldn't.

I am not interested in manufacturing a portfolio that looks like what we think a particular admissions committee wants to see. The strongest portfolios feel unmistakably connected to the young person who made them.

My job is to ask better questions, introduce possibilities, challenge students technically and conceptually, and help them recognize connections in their own work that they may not yet see. The finished portfolio should still belong completely to the student. In fact, if I am doing my job well, their work should become more individual—not less.

The first meeting is much more of a conversation than an evaluation.

I want to see the student's work, of course, but I also want to know who they are. What do they make when no one assigns the project? What subjects keep appearing? What are they curious about? What frustrates them? Do they love drawing but hate graphic design? Are they fascinated by fashion, architecture, animation, sculpture, illustration, fibers, photography—or are they still figuring that out?

We begin by looking for patterns. From there, I can identify strengths, gaps in the portfolio, areas worth exploring, and questions we need to answer before deciding what comes next.

A strong college counselor and a strong art teacher are both invaluable, but art-school admissions sits at the intersection of two highly specialized areas.

A college counselor may understand admissions but not necessarily how a portfolio is evaluated. An art teacher may know the student and their artwork extremely well but may not have extensive experience with the expectations of different art schools and university art programs., or simply does not have extra time to spend outside the class.

An independent art consultant can help bridge that gap—looking at the student, the portfolio, and the college list together rather than as separate pieces of the application.

You don’t need to be an artist to support an artistic child. In fact, many of the parents I work with are highly accomplished in fields far removed from the arts—medicine, law, finance, business, technology—and simply don’t have a frame of reference for evaluating a portfolio or understanding an art-school education.

That’s where an experienced art consultant can be enormously helpful. My role is to look objectively at where a student is now: their technical abilities, ideas, curiosity, work habits, creative voice, and potential for growth. From there, I can help families understand what is strong, what needs development, and what kind of college environment may allow that particular student to thrive.
